Lawrence Livermore National Lab November 15, 2001 West Parking Lot (Z-1 Area) Livermore, CA Facility: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is a premier applied-science national security laboratory. LLNL's mission is to apply science and technology in the national interest, with a focus on global security, global ecology, and bioscience. In part, their goal is to apply the best science and technology to enhance the security and well being of the nation and to make the world a safer place. And in addition, Livermore applies its scientific and engineering capabilities to develop advanced defense technologies to increase the effectiveness of U.S. military forces. The Lab serves both as a resource to U.S. government and as a partner with industry and academia. Hosting Group: Systems & Network Department responsible for all desktop computer system support (Macintosh, PC, UNIX, and LAN support services) at LLNL. Operating Environment: Presently, there are 150 networks spanning 350 buildings at LLNL. At this time, the institutional network (LabNet) is the backbone network that interconnects these 150 building networks. Commodity network technologies and components are used in the office networks, and for most of the server machines. The present standards provide 10/100 Mb/s Ethernet to the office, with multiple 100 Mb/s uplinks from the wiring closets. Under discussion are 1 Gb/s uplinks to the LabNet backbone. Target Audience: FBC promotes to all major departments and personnel including Purchasing Managers, Technical and Engineering Staffs, MIS Managers, Contracting Officers, Procurement Specialists, and End-Users.
