- Description
- Glucose Sensitive Regulator of Insulin Transcription -- -- -- -- The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), through the National Technology Transfer Center (NTTC), is seeking a commercialization partner to further develop this technology through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). -- -- -- The VA has discovered a novel insulin gene and a method of gene transcription to regulate insulin production by coupling insulin secretion to ambient glucose levels for gene therapy treatment of Type1 insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The VA research has demonstrated the utility of the coupled glucose- and insulin-sensitive promoter to appropriately regulate the production and secretion of transgenic insulin from hepatocytes both in vitro and in vivo, by utilizing transcription to control transgene expression. The research confirms that the promoter possesses the capacity to regulate transgenic insulin production from liver cells in response to metabolic signals regarding the need for insulin.
