- Description
- Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization (925) 423-3139 Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking one or more industrial partners to manufacture and market a portable chemical sensor based on lab-on-a-chip technology. The sensor, developed at LLNL, has demonstrated high sensitivity (ppb concentrations) for a variety of substances in aqueous form. Nearly any substance that can be carried in water is directly detectable. It is based on the well-known capillary electrophoresis technique that makes protocol development and validation straightforward. A unique aspect of the LLNL approach is the use of non-fluorescent optical sensing, which eliminates the need for sample derivitization or tagging. Commercial applications include medical and biological research, environmental monitoring, industrial hygiene, and emergency response. Government applications include detection of activities associated with the development and deployment of weapons of mass destruction-chemical, biological, and nuclear. The successful industrial partner will be responsible for fabrication of the critical sensor chip, requiring the following MEMS capabilities: Etching of microfluidic channels in quartz; embedded optical waveguides; quartz-quartz bonding; and fiber-optic termination. Additionally, the partner will be responsible for fabricating and/or integrating a microfluidic subsystem, lasers, photonic integrated circuits, embedded microcontrollers, electronic interfaces and power supplies, and operating software, into a complete, portable instrument. LLNL will provide substantial guidance in this cooperative partnership Companies interested in commercializing the chemical sensor should provide a written statement of interest that must include the following information: (1) company name and address, (2) the name, address, telephone number, and fax number of a point of contact, (3) a description of your company's expertise and facilities in the relevant technologies and (4) statement of your company's potential interest in research partnering. This is not a procurement. Statements of interest should be sent to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization Office, P.O. Box 808, L-795, Livermore, CA 94551 Attention: CBD-01-016. Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is printed to ensure consideration of your response.
