- Description
- WATER HARVESTING WORKSHOP, SN02-04. The Defense Sciences Office (DSO) of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is sponsoring a team-forming workshop for a new initiative in water harvesting technologies on December 12 and 13, 2001, at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel Los Angeles (LAX) Airport. The goal of this initiative is to develop and field innovative, energy-efficient water generation and purification/desalination technologies with the objective of eliminating more than 50% of the minimum daily water supply requirement (7 qts/day/soldier) for both small and large groups of warfighters. Special emphasis will be placed on the development of technologies that efficiently extract water on demand from non-traditional sources for 2 to 12 warfighters by harvesting water, for example from atmospheric moisture, the soldier's breath, combusted hydrocarbon fuels and wet earth and mud of various soil compositions. Additional innovations will be sought in technologies that produce potable water from traditional, non-brackish and brackish sweet water sources, such as puddles, ponds, lakes, streams and rivers as well from seawater by highly efficient purification/desalination techniques. US Government personnel and DARPA contractors will present overviews dealing with the current status and results of (a) ongoing water purification/desalination programs funded by DARPA/DSO and the military services, (b) inserting some of the more mature programs into the Services, and (c) a general vision for a possible initiative dealing with water harvesting technologies. To facilitate interaction and team prospecting amongst the participants a poster session forum including brief oral presentations beforehand will follow the Government presentations. Participants are strongly encouraged to prepare posters and very short summary overview presentations describing areas of capabilities and interest. A short abstract of each poster presentation is required and will be distributed to all participants at the workshop (participants are encouraged to submit abstracts via email to baa01-42_H20@darpa.mil, please include Water Harvesting Workshop Abstract in the subject line, no later than November 30, 2001). Participants will be allowed up to 5 minutes (depending on the number of presentations offered) to give an oral summary of their poster during the first day of the Workshop, with the actual poster session held during the morning of the second day. Please access the Water Harvesting Workshop website, https://safe.sysplan.com/water_harvesting/, for workshop registration. Participants are strongly encouraged to visit the Water Harvesting teaming website at http://teaming.sysplan.com/Water-SN-02-04/ in order to enable additional teaming opportunities for those unable to attend the workshop or for those who would like to initiate teaming arrangements beforehand. DARPA anticipates release of solicitation information within 4-6 weeks. The workshop registration fee is $100.00 and is inclusive of all workshop activities. Registration cutoff is November 30, 2001, or at attendance capacity. Space is limited and it is recommended that you register early. For further administrative information contact baa01-42_H2O@darpa.mil. Please include "Water Harvesting Workshop" in the subject line.
