Argonne Workshop on Center for Nanoscale Materials A workshop will be held at Argonne National Laboratory on Monday October 22nd, 2001 in conjunction with Argonne's proposal to the Department of Energy to establish the Center for Nanoscale Materials. The goal of the Center is to advance the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology by developing and supporting advanced facilities for synthesis and characterization of nanostructures that are accessible to internal and external users. The Center will leverage existing facilities at Argonne, especially the Advanced Photon Source (APS). For example, a state-of-the-art x-ray nanoprobe to examine materials on the nanoscale will be developed. Discussions are underway concerning instrumentation to include in the Center, such as lithography, etching, and self-assembly laboratories, so the opportunity is ripe to influence the Center's directions. Universities and other research institutions involved in non-proprietary research are invited to participate in the development of the plans for the Center. The workshop will provide a forum for such input. At the workshop preliminary plans for the Center will be reviewed. This announcement is to solicit poster presentations from potential users. A small workshop specifically on "Nanoscale Science using Synchrotron Techniques" is also planned in conjunction with the next Advanced Photon Source user's meeting to be held on October 9th, 2001 (details at http://www.aps.anl.gov/conferences/11um/) Communication with Argonne on this subject can be addressed to nano@anl.gov.
