- Description
- The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. ("AURA") is seeking a qualified vendor to supply optical component(s) used in the Gemini 8m telescope. Drawings and specifications will be provided to fabricate a 1m class aspheric (convex hyperbolic) secondary mirror. The vendor shall be responsible for fabricating the 85% lightweighted Zerodur substrate and polishing the optical surface, which extends to the edge of the substrate, to final figure requirements approximating 350nm RMS and surface roughness below 20A. The vendor shall also be responsible for optical testing in downward facing orientation and detailed error analysis indicating specifications have been successfully met. The Gemini Observatory is an international collaboration to build and operate two 8 meter telescopes, one located on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the other located on Cerro Pachon in Chile. The Gemini partners include the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Australia. The Gemini project is operated by AURA under contract to the National Science Foundation.
