Description

Notice of intent to negotiate a sole source contract with Dr. Robert Braun, DVM in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Purpose of proposed contract is to provide primary veterinary consultation services for research and management activities concerning health and disease of endangered Hawaiian monk seals. Work will be conducted on the main Hawaiian island. Proposed contractor will organize and oversee activities involving monk seal disease and health assessment; provide recommendations on integration of health/disease evaluations associated with various projects; evaluate research and management activities to ensure monk seals welfare during all captures, perform clinical evaluations, and oversee collection of samples; oversee procedures for all on-site laboratory assessments; and provide recommendations and assist in th development and implementation of appropriate contingency plans in case of unforeseen epidemiological events which threaten the Hawaiian monk seal population. Proposed contractor is an expert pinniped veterinarian with more than ten years of experience working with endangered Hawaiian monk seals and other marine mammals. Proposed contractor has worked more than seven years in both clinical and wild situations. Proposed contractor only known source with extensive experience conducting clinical assessments of captive and wild monk seals.
