Description

The U. S. Department of Commerce, National Marine Fisheries Service intends to procure services through the University of Durham, Biological Sciences Department, Durham, England, the only known source for genetic analyses of sperm whales samples. The samples will be collected by the Southeast Fisheries Science Center during a study in the Gulf of Mexico during 2001. Samples collected will be sent to the contractor by September 1, 2001. The contractor shall use these samples along with sperm whale samples to determine the following: 1. Kinship within and between social groups in the northern Gulf of Mexico. 2. Population structuring with respect to both the movements of male and female sperm whales. 3. The extent and range of gene flow between sperm whales in the Gulf of Mexico and other geographic regions of the world. Progress, status and final reports will be required.
