- Description
- The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) intends to negotiate with Cummins-Wagner Company Inc, of Annapolis Junction, MD, on a sole source basis under the authority of FAR Part 13.106-1(b), Soliciting from a single source, for the purchase of John Crane Inc. patented mechanical bellow seals to be used at the NIST Nuclear Reactor. The John Crane part number for the mechanical bellow seals is = 765023-01; description 60SXAC-XX0301-36, per drawing number SK-169. The NIST Reactor shall be fitted with a single contacting liquid lubricated mechanical face seal. The reactor shaft seal shall be a high quality design capable of process liquid pressure to 300 psig, temperature from -20 degrees F to 400 degrees F, and shaft speed of 10,000 SFPM. The seal assembly shall be designed to fit, without modification, the NIST Reactor. The seal assembly shall include a gland with threaded bearing retainer, stationary bellows assembly, rotating mating ring, and spacer sleeve. The seal gland and bearing retainer shall be made of 316 Stainless Steel, and designed to accept a stationary bellows unit welded directly to the gland. The bellows unit shall include 0.005" thick bellows plates, welded into 9 bellows convolutions with 45 degree angle at each convolution I.D. to distribute operating stresses away from the welds, along with nesting ripples to allow full bellows compression. The stationary seal face shall be premium grade graphite impregnated carbon specifically designed for mechanical face seal applications. The mating ring shall be made of 316 Stainless Steel with hard chrome (No Sterlite) seal face plating and designed to distribute stress away from the seal face area when clamped and to allow installation in the correct direction only, and with two separate grooves on the I.D. for shaft sealing o-rings. The spacer sleeve shall be made of 316 Stainless Steel and stepped at mating ring end to provide more clamping area. All seals shall include material certifications. The seal assembly o-rings are to be supplied by NIST. The patented John Crane mechanical bellow seals are currently being used and maintained as a critical component of the NIST high performance Reactor. The special patented design of the John Crane mechanical bellow seals make the seals uniquely qualified to support and be compatible with the already existing equipment used at the NIST Nuclear Reactor. The Government anticipates awarding a firm-fixed price purchase order. Interested persons may identify their interest and = capability to respond to the requirement or submit quotes by June 27, 2001. This notice of intent is not a request for competitive quotes. A Request for Quotation (RFQ) package is not available. The NAICS code for this requirement is 421830 with a size standard of 500 employees. A determination by the Government not to compete this requirement based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Contracting Officer.
