Description

Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport requires ODIM Spectrum Ltd. of Peterborough, Ontario to make structural modifications to the Lightweight Broadband Variable Depth Sonar (LBVDS) Handling and Stowage Group (H&SG), perform stress calculations for the modified system, conduct factory tests on the modified system and update the assembly drawings, and Operations & Maintenance Manual. The IUSW-21 Program has determined that this system is appropriate for the one-time Advanced Development Model (ADM) test aboard the Destroyer in 2002. In support of this sea test, the LBVDS H&SG must undergo modifications for the increased freeboard and higher towing loads. These modifications include hydraulic cylinders with longer length and more capacity, re-designed deck foundations for the Destroyer, extensions to the over-boarding mechanism, re-design of the hydraulic power units to increase load capability of the system, re-alignment of the Fairlead Tow Block for mounting on the Destroyer, finite element model calculations for additional stresses on system.
