Description
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires assistance in setting up experiments which use CW UV narrowband laser sources which are used in experiments on trapped beryllium atomic ions. Work is expected to involve two overall tasks: (1) Set up of lasers and ancillary equipment for laser cooling and quantum state manipulation of beryllium ions which are trapped in linear rf traps, (2) Participate in ongoing investigations in to the trapping and sympathetic cooling of positrons in a Penning trap by laser-cooled beryllium ions. Subtasks are (1) optimize power of two 626 nm dye lasers pumped by 532 nm solid-state lasers, (2) stabilize frequency of dye lasers to molecular iodine spectra using saturated absorption techniques, (3) design and construction of frequency doubling optics to convert 626 nm radiation to 313 nm radiation, (4) implementation and optimization of 626 -- 313 nm doublers, (5) installation of beam switching hardware for 313 nm laser beams (using acousto-optic modulators, and (6) measure temperature of the beryllium ions in the beryllium/positron experiment through the Doppler broadening on the 313 nm laser transition from the beryllium-ion ground state. Applicants must have demonstrated previous experience with both CW UV coherent sources and laser cooling of trapped atomic ions. Experience with radioactive positron sources is preferred. Interested applicants must submit a written qualification statement with references, showing relevant experience. The award decision will be based upon the best value to the Government, with technical merit and past performance being more important than price. Requests should reference Synopsis Number NB847-100132DT and include a written qualification statement clearly establishing capability to meet the above requirements. Responses are due via mail or FAX by June 25, 2001. Technical questions can be directed to David Wineland at 303-497-5286. No RFQ package is available. This procurement is being conducted per Simplified Acquisition Procedures FAR Part 13 (NTE $100,000).
