Description

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) intends to contract with the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) to provide logistical support and acquire data for a joint USFWS/CWS satellite telemtry study of Common Eiders in the Beaufort Sea. CWS and USFWS are partners on a satellite telemtry study of common eiders, as part of the Seaduck Joint Venture. Transmitters will be surgically implanted in 15 eiders and tracked for up to 1 year after release to identify migration routes and wintering areas. CWS will be responsible for all logistical arrangements, including air transport, purchase of food and supplies, and technician salaries, necessary to establish a remote field camp and mark birds with the help of a veterinarian contracted by USFWS to assist on this project. Specifically CWS will 1) Capture 15 common eiders (a seaduck) on Victoria Island, Northwest Territories, during June 2001, and surgically implant satellite transmitters in those 15 eiders with the aid of a qualified veterinarian; and 2) Contract with Service Argos, Inc. for acquisition and processing of satellite data and will provide USFWS with a set of maps showing bird locations on a bi-monthly basis beginning in August 2001, as well as posting movement data on their web site.
