Description
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) plans to negotiate a Purchase Order with the University of Iowa to determine the affect on visibility of pavement marking during and immediately after rainfall. The University of Iowa Operator Performance Laboratory, under Dr. Tom Schnell, previously completed a pavement marking visibility field study; however, there is no data on detection distances and luminance values for pavement marking materials during rainfall. This project will be a continuation of the original study conducted and will allow for the evaluation of the effectiveness of various pavement-marking materials under a variety of environmental conditions. Additionally, the data developed under the previous study and this project is desired for integration into the Target Visibility Predictor (TARVIP) computer model. In order for this integration to be a success it is essential that the author of TARVIP computer modeling program, Dr. Schnell, research the effects on the visibility of pavement marking materials under simulated rainfall conditions. Therefore, Dr. Tom Schnell and the University of Iowa is considered the only known source available for the successful and timely completion of this project. This is a Simplified Acquisition and the anticipated award date is April 25, 2001.
