- Description
- The project is the construction of a Biological Control Containment Facility located on the Ft. Lauderdale campus of the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. The work will consist of a Base Bid and 4 Options. The Base Bid will consist of site work, steel and reinforced concrete construction of the quarantine laboratories and greenhouses, non-quarantine laboratories, administrative and scientist offices with related HVAC and electrical system. Bid Option Number 1 consists of the construction of two laboratories and four scientist offices, including HVAC, other related systems, and site work. Bid Option Number 2 consists of adding protective coil coating on AHU-2 and AHU-3 in the mechanical penthouse, changing main switchboard to draw out switch gear in electrical room, and installation of seven air curtains above select doors. Bid Option Number 5 consists of construction of low screen wall with signage and lighting along pedestrian walkway, planter/bench at building entry, exterior concrete slab and walkway along the north side of the building, landscaping, and asphalt paving at service drive. Bid option Item 6 consists of providing mobile adjustable tables in headhouse, soil sterilization system and installation of crash rails along corridors. Bid Options 3 and 4 have been deleted from the requirement. The facility is part of an overall program to accelerate the integration of biological control technology into Melaleuca management efforts and has been designed for the importation, containment, augmentation, study and release of exotic insects, mites and nematodes for the biological control of noxious weeds. It will serve as the regional center for biological control in the southeastern United States. In addition, it supports basic entomological studies on the systematic, behavior, physiology and biology of insects of foreign origin. Researchers from the USDA-ARS, Invasive Week Ecology and Biological Control Research Unit and the University of Florida will use this containment facility. Estimated construction time is: Base Bid -- 395 calendar days; Option 1 -- 30 calendar days; Options 2, 3, and 4 -- no additional calendar days. Magnitude of construction is between $1,000,000 and $5,000,000. Invitation will be issued on or about 13 March 2001 and close on or about 27 April 2001. Proposals will be evaluated on technical and price factors. Technical factors may include, but not be limited to, previous construction experience with similar facilities and past performance.
