Description
The Defense Threat Reduction Agency, 6801 Telegraph Road, Alexandria, Va 22310-3398 has a requirement for Radiation Effects Test Utility of Laser Plasma Radiation Sources. The proposed purchase order is for services which the government intends to solicit and negotiate with only one source which is Alme Associates under authority of FAR 6.302. The contractor shall: TASK 1: Continue studies to assist coordination of research objectives to develop high intensity laser plasma x-ray and ignition sources that are compatible with the unique needs of radition effects test requirements. Assist with the development of sources to enhance the test fidelity of laser plasma radiation sources by use of innovative techniques of experiment design and system optimization. To accomplish this objective, continue to foster close collaboration between DTRA and other scientists in the US, UK and France. This includes to assist in joint experiments with scientists at AWE in the UK (one week) in collaboration with LLNL, and CEA (French). Also, to continue to suppoer laser plasma source studies in collaboration with LLNL and CEA on the Omega laser at UR/LLE (2 days). TASK 2: Perform detailled technical evaluation of the spectral and temporal test utility expected with laser produced x-ray sources. This will involve comparison of expected x-ray outputs to usesr needs for cold, warm and hot X-ray testing. To accomplish this objective will require active participation and technical oversight of test capability development from laser x-ray sources to include studies/tests of source output, debris mitigation and techniques to improve source fidelity. TASK 3: Advise DTRA on cooperation and support of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Project Office and the Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) Target Physics Program at DOE to leverage national resources that may enhance the development of useful laser plasma radiation sources.
