- Description
- The National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST) intends to negotiate on a sole source basis with the University of Maryland, Institute for Physical Science and Technology, College Park, Maryland for research assistance services. Tasks shall include the development of an apparatus that will be capable of laser cooling rubidium atoms, cooling them down to the point where they form Bose Einstein condensates (BEC), and loading them into a periodic potential (optical lattice) formed by the interference of multiple laser beams. This shall include development of precise laser systems suitable for laser cooling; an ultra high vacuum system with long lifetimes; a high flux atomic beam source; and electronics for experimental control. Design of three dimensional optical lattice geometries optimized for particular experiments shall also be necessary. F.O.B. Destination, Gaithersburg, Maryland. The period of performance shall be one year from date of award. This is a sole source requirement with the University of Maryland because they have participated previously in the design and beginning construction stages of this specific experimental apparatus. They have explicit knowledge and experience about the details that no other group possess allowing them to perform this work in the required amount of time. This order shall be processed using Simplified Acquisition Procedures. The estimated award date shall be 02/08/01. Interested offerors may identify their capabilities in writing. The capability statement must provide adequate information to demonstrate the ability to perform the required services. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed order based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government. This notice is not a Request for Quotation, however, the Government will consider all responses received by the closing date. A solicitation document is not available.
