DESCRIPTION -- QUANTITY = 1 LOT Ceramic matrix composite coupons that are carbon fiber reinforced -- silicon carbide matrix composite coupons made from a proprietary Silazane Resin. It also includes research involving a filler study to determine the optimum B4C filler level that should be incorporated into the composite coupons ordered. The purchase should include: 1) Product -- 48 tensile bars, C/(SiC+Si3N4) with either SiC or SiC+B4C filler. 2) Research -- A Filler Study to investigate the influence of different levels of B4C on the oxidative behavior of the Silazane matrix (SiC+Si3N4); includes mixtures of SiC and B4C, at 0,20,40,60,80,100% B4C. Company should mix matrix with powders, pyrolyze, and oxidize samples at 800C and 1200C, and record weight change. Samples will be provided to NASA for characterization. The results of this study will be used to determine the filler content in the tensile bars listed above. NASA/GRC intends to purchase the items from COI Ceramics Inc. The coupons required are made using proprietary resins. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed effort on a full and open competition basis, based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the government. The Government intends to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12. The provisions and clauses in the RFQ are those in effect through FAC 97-20.
