- Description
- This is modification 2 to the Request for Information entitled SPACE SHUTTLE LAPTOP COMPUTER MODEM REPLACEMENT, 9-BJ2-57-0-51I, which was posted on November 21, 2000. This modification 1) addresses questions received on the original RFI and; 2) addresses the approximate number of units anticipated to be purchased. QUESTION: Provide complete specifications on the laptop. Is this laptop COTS, or custom? ANSWER: It is intended for the proposed modem to be capable of operating in conjunction with any Windows based personal computer. This would include the IBM 760 laptop computer currently used on the shuttle and various makes and models of Windows based desk top personal computers used in the mission control center and astronaut training facilities. The modem operation would have to be computer independent by utilizing standard computer interfaces (i.e. RS-232, RS-422, PCMCIA, or USB or combinations of these interfaces). QUESTION: What data transfer rates are required? ANSWER: The data transfer rate must be at least the current effective transfer rate of approximately 2 kbps. It is expected that little increase in the data transfer rate can be realized due to the limiting characteristics of the shuttle voice channels. QUESTION: Do you want to use this laptop for voice and video, as well as file transfer? ANSWER: Although the modem would be utilizing a shuttle air-to-ground voice channel, it's only purpose would be point-to-point transfer of computer files (no real time video or audio). If an RFP is announced, the approximate minimum quantities would be as follows: Engineering Units: 2 Design Qualification Units: 2 Flight Units: 20 Ground Units: 20 Final quanitites purchased will depend on per unit replacement vs. repair/re-certification costs. If it is more economical to simply replace failed units rather than troubleshoot, repair, and re-certify over the operating lifetime of the modems, increased quantities will be purchased. All other posted requirements and/or information remain unchanged. Please contact Venessa Jankowski, 281-438-4162, if there are any questions.
