- Description
- The Aircraft Stores Interface Manual (ASIM) is an Allied Ordnance Publication controlled under North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) standardization agreements. The purpose of ASIM is to aid in the planning, designing, and testing of new aircraft and munitions, and to assist in the adaptation and certification of existing stores and munitions for new aircraft. The manuals are intended for tri-Service use within the US Department of Defense, use by NATO defense organizations, and by U.S. and NATO defense-related private industry. The ASIM is the most comprehensive collection of aircraft, stores, and suspension equipment engineering drawings available. The content of ASIM was converted from paper to electronic format on a single CD-ROM in Version 1.0, published in March 1998. Version 2.0 upgraded program execution with search engine enhancements and refined data and enhancements by such measures as conversion of ASIM documentation to HTML format. In the area of data additions and conversion, additional aircraft and stores were added, drawings were converted from raster to vector format and all drawings were reproduced at 1/16 scale. Scanned photos and/or 3-D shaded renderings of aircraft were also being added to the database. And in the area of data setup and installation, with version 2.0 the user was able to add a user-drawn weapon to an existing ASIM aircraft drawing through the addition of an enhanced 2-D CADDRAW software capability in the included drawing software. Version 3 features extensive additions and improvements over Version 2.0. All CAD drawings were reviewed and updated to ensure accuracy against current available data. The UK provided updated data for the majority of its drawings, as well as new stores and suspension items for incorporation into ASIM. New and updated data provided by other NATO member has been incorporated and aircraft and equipment no longer in use by any NATO nation, such as the Blackburn Buccaneer was removed. Version 3.0 incorporates as many graphic files (photographs or computer-rendered images) as possible into ASIM to illustrate the drawings. These graphic images include aircraft, stores, dispensers, missiles, bombs, launchers, and suspension lugs. In addition, there has been a review/revision of drawings throughout all ASIM volumes to produce a consistent format. The final Version 3.0 improvement is that the ASIM User's Manual has been revised with two goals in mind. The first is to update the manual to align with the Version 3 software changes, and the second was to rewrite instruction sets in the manual to make them easier for people new to ASIM and NATO personnel to follow. The following NATO aircraft types are represented in the ASIM databases: A-10, A-3, A-37, A-4, A-6, A-7, AV-8 Harrier, Sea Harrier, Harrier II, T-28, F-100, F-101, F-104, RF-104, F-105, F-106, F-111, RF-111, FB-111, F-117, F-14, F-15, F-16, F/A-18, F-35 Draken, F-4, RF-4, F-5, F-8, RF-84, Alpha Jet, AMX, Etendard IV, G-91, Hawk, Jaguar, MB-339, Mirage F-1, Mirage 2000, Mirage III, Mirage V, Super Etendard, Tornado, Viggen, B-1B, B-26, B-52, B-58, B-66, C-130, U-6, L-19, O-1, O-2, OV-10, P-2, P-3 Orion, CP-140 Aurora, PC-9, S-3, Nimrod, Breguet Atlantic BR1150, H-1, H-2, H-3, H-14, H-21, H-37, H-46, H-47, H-53, H-58, H-60, S-70 Seahawk, H-64, H-124, Chinook, Lynx, Sea Lynx, Sea King Wasp, and Aero Spatiale AS550.
