Description
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory/California Institute of Technology (Caltech/JPL), operating under a prime contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), announces its intent to conduct Industry-led studies in 2001 for Mars Sample Return Mission and systems preliminary designs for NASA's Mars Exploration Program. The Sample Return Mission is currently baseline in the Mars Exploration Program for launch in 2011. Specific technical trades will be requested in the studies as well as preliminary designs for complete mission/system concepts. Three (3) parallel studies estimated at $1 million per study are envisioned. Period of studies is anticipated to be April through September 2001. A Request for Proposal (RFP) release and an associated Pre-proposal Industrial Briefing are envisioned for late January or early February 2001. Sample return concepts need to be explored next year, in 2001, in order to set the requirements on orbiter and lander missions to be launched in 2007, such that they demonstrate the technologies required for sample return. Please provide your interest in attending the Briefing and/or direct your questions to Stuart Imai at (818) 354-2070 or via e-mail to Stuart.T.Imai@jpl.nasa.gov no later than January 16, 2001. This is not a Request for Proposal (RFP).
