- Description
- DESCRIPTION -- GLAST Anticoincidence Detector (ACD) Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs) and High-Voltage Power Supplies (HVPS) Request for Information (RFI). This RFI is issued solely for information and planning purposes -- it does not constitute a Request for Proposal (RFP). The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is searching for potential suppliers for the Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) Anticoincidence Detector (ACD) photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and high-voltage power supplies (HVPS). The ACD must be able to discriminate the gamma-ray photons from the cosmic ray charged particle background with high accuracy. The ACD subsystem is the primary means of rejecting this cosmic ray background. The ACD design is based on using plastic scintillator tiles with photomultiplier tubes, also called phototubes. The ACD assembly, including supporting structure, scintillator, PMTs and HVPS, must be a thin shell, less than 5 cm total thickness. The scientific goals require that the amount of material outside the plastic scintillator itself be as small as possible. The mechanical constraints on the GLAST ACD permit only small photomultiplier tube types to be considered. The GLAST ACD requires over 300 small photomultiplier tubes and a comparable number of individual, low-power high-voltage supplies. Vendors may offer photomultiplier tubes, high-voltage power supplies, or assemblies of both. All of these must be sufficiently reliable and tested for space flight use. Delivery of a prototype may be required as early as Spring 2001. RESPONSE FORMAT AND DELIVERY -- For planning purposes, NASA's GSFC is seeking information from potential suppliers for the acquisition of the ACD PMTs and HVPS. Potential suppliers are requested to respond regarding their capability to supply the ACD PMTs and HVPS in writing via letter or email by November 13, 2000. The information obtained in response to this RFI will be used exclusively by NASA personnel to assist in planning for the acquisition of ACD PMTs and HVPS. Information should be submitted in Microsoft Office (Word/PowerPoint/Excel). Additional information in the form of brochures or user manuals is welcome. Any material submitted will not be returned. Respondents shall clearly identify sensitive or proprietary material. NASA's GSFC reserves the right to contact vendors to provide clarification on capabilities or to ask questions. NASA's GSFC will not pay for expenses incurred by any of the respondents to the RFI. For additional information concerning this request, please contact Kellie Murray at (301)286-6640 or at the following email address: kmurray@pop200.gsfc.nasa.gov Responses should be emailed or sent to the following address: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Attn: Kellie Murray, Code 216, Greenbelt, MD 20771.
