- Description
- The United States Army has a need for a high energy, low vulnerability, large caliber propulsion system in support of the ongoing Multi-role ETC Armament System and Ammo Suite development work at the TACOM-ARDEC. A propulsion system with the following characteristics is needed in order to meet specific performance requirements: (1) a charge loading density greater than or equal to 1.3 g/cc, (2) vulnerability and sensitivity characteristics no worse than currently fielded U.S. gun propellants such as JA2, and (3) propellant formulation(s) with an impetus level greater than or equal to 1300 J/g and a flame temperature less than or equal to 3450K. Manufacturing operations must be capable of supporting deliverables on the order of 1,000 to 2,500 kg per year from FY01 through FY05 and greater quantities beyond FY05. Interested parties should submit propulsion system descriptions in sufficient detail so that interior ballistic calculations can be performed to determine if the propulsion concept is theoretically capable of meeting the performance requirements. The details are to include at a minimum: propellant formulation (s), propellant configuration/granulation, and a burn rate data (include description of test apparatus and data reduction techniques to achieve the given burn rate). A sample interior ballistic code input deck may also be provided; the interior ballistic code IBHVG2 will be used to evaluate the performance potential of the provided concepts. Any additional data characterizing the propulsion concept such as sensitivity, vulnerability, hazard/safety, or gun test data may be submitted. The interested party is to submit a statement of current propellant manufacturing capabilities and a gap analysis to identify any additional skills, equipment, and/or technologies that are required in order to produce the propellant quantities noted above. Include a detailed plan and schedule of how these additional capabilities will be developed or obtained.
