Description
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center seeks to transfer into commercial application a technology that will enable a company to provide improved polishing of precision aluminum optics to a variety of markets. A patent is pending on this technology. Researchers have developed a revolutionary process that results in unprecedented smoothness in all-aluminum mirrors. NASA seeks a company interested in licensing and developing this technology for commercial applications through a license agreement. A Technology Commercialization Briefing will be held at Goddard on November 15, 2000 to provide interested companies with detailed information on the technology and the process that will be followed to establish partnership agreements and/or licenses for commercialization. Attendance at the meeting will require execution of a non-disclosure agreement. ALUMINUM SUPER-POLISH TECHNOLOGIES -- NASA Goddard has developed a process that produces mirrors that are lighter, less expensive, and more thermally stable than aluminum mirrors plated with electroless nickel. The NASA super aluminum polish provides smoother surfaces and consistent quality. This technology uses diamond turning and polishing with a special compound to achieve a smooth surface-down to 5 angstroms-on an all-aluminum mirror. POTENTIAL COMMERCIAL USES -- X-ray telescopes, cryogenic instruments, interferometry, medical imaging devices. BENEFITS -- low weight, thermal stability, low cost, smooth surface, and consistent quality. OPTIONS FOR COMMERCIALIZATION -- The subject of the November 15, 2000 briefing will be the partnership and licensing options available for the aluminum polishing technology. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY -- US Patent Application No. 09 492085, applied for on January 27, 2000. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW -- NASA intends to commercialize this technology by patent license and/or Commercial Agreement. Following the briefing, companies will be invited to submit a commercialization business plan for joint development and/or patent license agreements to Mr. Joe Famiglietti, Commercial Technology Office, Goddard Space Flight Center, Mailstop 750.0, Greenbelt, MD 20771. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO -- Companies interested in attending the Technology Commercialization Briefing on November 15, 2000, or in learning more about the Aluminum Super-Polish Technology should register online at http://www.rti.org/technology/tbrief/signup.cfm or contact: NASA Technology Applications Team, Research Triangle Institute, Susan Brown, PO Box 12194, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709-2194, (919) 541-7401, FAX (919) 541-6221, email seb@rti.org, by November 15,2000. The briefing will be held at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on November 15, 2000.
