- Description
- NASA/MSFC plans to issue a Request for Offer (RFO) for precision mandrels to support technology development of replicated-segment grazing-incidence optics for the Constellation X-ray Mission. The mandrels will be the precision convex surfaces, from which off-axis, azimuthal mirror segments will be replicated, then subsequently aligned and mounted into a full-figure-of-revolution Wolter Type-1 (paraboloid-hyperboloid) x-ray optic. SPECIFICATION To support this technology development program, the mandrels to be procured must satisfy the following approximate specification, subject to revision and elucidation in the RFO. 7 Fabricated to specified 10-m-focal-length Wolter Type-1 (paraboloid-hyperboloid) prescriptions, for specified radii of curvature (between 0.50 m and 0.80 m, see options) at P-H intersection. 7 Precision figured to a geometric half-power diameter (demonstrated by metrology and two-reflection ray-trace prediction) less than 4 arcsecond. 7 Superpolished to better than a 0.4-nm root-mean-square surface (demonstrated by metrology), for spatial frequencies exceeding 1 mm-1. 7 Sized such that figure and surface specifications are satisfied over an identified area corresponding to an (azimuthal) arc length of at least 0.42 m (at the P-H intersection) and an axial length of at least 0.50 m per surface (contiguous at the P-H intersection). 7 Made of chemically stable and durable materials, compatible with vacuum coating systems, immersion in chemical agent cleaning baths, and numerous replications without degradation of the surface. 7 Made of nonmetallic materials, sufficiently stress-free, strong, and dimensionally stable to maintain specified figure at 20 C, after numerous replications and thermal cycles between -195 C and +100 C. 7 Designed to allow for installation of customer-supplied adapters and replication of segments without deformation of the mandrel's figure. The Government does not intend to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12. See Note 26. The NAICS Code and Size Standard are 333515 and 500, respectively. The DPAS Rating for this procurement is DO-C9. The provisions and clauses in the RFO and model contract are those in effect through FAC 97-19. All qualified responsible sources may submit an offer which shall be considered by the agency. The anticipated release date of the RFO is on or about October 27, 2000 with an anticipated offer due date of on or about November 26, 2000. An ombudsman has been appointed -- See NASA Specific Note "B". The solicitation and any documents related to this procurement will be available over the Internet. These documents will be in Microsoft Office Suite (Word 6.0, Excel 5.0, PowerPoint 4.0) format and will reside on a World Wide Web (WWW) server, which may be accessed using a WWW browser application.
