- Description
- On behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) anticipates negotiating one or more license agreements with U.S. companies interested in commercializing a new and efficient fan technology developed at NREL. Fans are widely used throughout the economy from large cooling towers and air conditioners to smaller radiator fans on most vehicles. Total energy consumption for small, medium, and large fans is substantial. Through a multi-year effort, NREL and Airfoils, Inc. set a goal to design advanced airfoil profiles to reduce this energy consumption. Test results of these advanced airfoil profiles on a fifth-scale, eight-bladed, cooling tower fan at the Texas A&M Energy Systems Laboratory, a cooling tower certified fan test facility, have shown significant energy savings. At normal operating conditions the advanced airfoils help provide a 7% improvement in static efficiency and a 10% to 12% improvement in total efficiency relative to the NACA 63(2)-615 airfoil profile commonly used on current fans. For further information on collaboration with NREL, please contact Ken Touryan, NREL Technology Transfer Office, (303) 275-3009, or by email: ken_touryan@nrel.gov.
