RFP-NIAID-DIR-01-51 DUE 082100 POC Karin E. Eddy / Ivan Hernandez,
(301) 496-3878 17. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases (NIAID), Division of Intramural Research, intends to contract
with New Iberia Research Center (NIRC) of the Southwestern Louisiana
University for the Maintenance of a Specific Pathogen Free (SPF)
Pigtail Macaque Breeding Colony, as a sole source. The NIRC has
established a self-perpetuating breeding colony of SPF pigtail macaques
(Macaca nemestrina) to ensure the supply of SPF status domestic
nonhuman primate subjects of the species required for NIAID research.
The program offers healthy pigtail macaque monkeys that are free of
specific retroviruses (SIV, SRV-D, STLV-1) and herpes B virus
(Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1). The NIRC breeding program continues to
support relevant research projects, such as genetic characterization
of the colony, which serve to enhance production by insuring that sound
breeding and management strategies are implemented. The NIAID requires
a minimum of 50 SPF juvenile Pigtail Macaques per year for ongoing
NIAID research on the mechanisms of host-specific pathogenesis of
SIVagm. The NIRC owns the 361 pigtail macaques involved in an SPF
breeding program. For questions about this acquisition, please contact
