The USGS Volcano Disaster Assistance Program requires 3 each Kinemetrics Model PS-2 Portable Seismographs with 3 each Kinemetrics Model SS-1 Ranger Seismometers and accessories. The instruments will be used in an existing equipment cache monitoring active volcanoes for rapid response to volcano crises. The government intends to acquire these items from Kinemetrics, Inc., Pasadena, CA, the only responsible source and no other supplies or services will satisfy agency requirements. The Kinemetrics PS-2 is the only known portable seismograph that can be hooked directly into incoming radio telemetry signals, and can network with existing PS-2's to provide common time marks allowing centralized synchronized recording from several remote telemetered sites. The PS-2 is also the only known portable seismograph proven reliable in extremely dusty and static-prone environments and during long-term power outages that accompany volcanic eruptions.
