COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MAY 18,2000 PSA#2603SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (SBA) ESTABLISHES NEW TABLE OF SIZE
STANDARDS BASED ON NORTH AMERICAN INDUSTRY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM
(NAICS) TO REPLACE TABLE BASED ON STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION
(SIC) SYSTEM. The Small Business Administration (SBA) has amended its
Small Business Size Regulations (13 CFR 121) by establishing a new
table of small business size standards for industries as the North
American Industry Classification System (NAICS) defines them. These new
size standards are effective beginning with Fiscal Year 2001, which
starts on October 1, 2000. Small business size standards currently
exist for most industries under the Standard Industrial Classification
(SIC) system. SBA has determined that NAICS is a better description of
industries in the U.S. economy than the SIC system for purposes of
establishing size standards. SBA proposed this changed in the Federal
Register on October 22, 1999. The Final Rule appeared in the May 15,
2000 Federal Register (64 FR 30836-30863). It is available on SBA's
Website at http://www.sba.gov/size/. WEB: SBA Size Standards,
