Guess, Contracting Officer (412) 386-6826 The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently involved in an effort to prevent work-related asthma. The objectives of this research is to study building-related asthma in office buildings and schools and will include (1) determining the prevalence and if possible the incidence of work-related asthma and other respiratory conditions in occupants of a "problem" non-industrial, non-residential building prior to a planned remediation, (2) characterization of the indoor environment which led to the need for remediation and their relationship to building malfunctions, (3) an investigation of the associations between the indoor environment and work-related asthma using pre-remediation data, (4) determination of exposures of construction/remediation workers during remediation, and (5) determining whether the remediation is associated with decreases in prevalence of work-related asthma by comparison of pre- and post-remediation data.
