COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MARCH 2,2000 PSA#2548

A -- ADVANCED SUPERSONIC PROGRAM -- INDUSTRY DAY; MARCH 28, 2000; HILTON ALEXANDRIA MARK CENTER HOTEL Special Notice 00-17: DARPA is developing a new initiative directed to the flight demonstration of a highly efficient, long-range supersonic aircraft incorporating a variety of new and evolving technologies with special emphasis on sonic boom and supersonic noise mitigation. DARPA envisions the initiation of two parallel activities: 1) advanced technology development and maturation, and 2) advanced platform mission analysis, systems study, and flight demonstration. The success of the overall program is predicated on developing a successful interdependence between these two efforts. Examples of technologies of interest include direct mitigation of sonic boom by shaping, plasma and adaptive flow control and technologies that indirectly decrease sonic boom amplitude through weight reduction and high altitude operation. Examples of specific technologies include supersonic laminar flow control, high bypass supersonic cruise engines, and advanced materials including foamed metallic structures and monolithic ceramics for engines. The initial step in the dissemination of information on this initiative will be an Advanced Supersonic Platform Industry Day on Tuesday, March 28, 2000. The goals of this meeting are threefold: 1) To familiarize participants with DARPA interest in supersonic aircraft concepts, 2) To identify advanced and evolving technologies applicable to these vehicles and subsystems, and 3) To promote an open discussion of capabilities among potential program participants to promote teaming and interaction. It is our desire to facilitate the formation of strong teams and business relationships in order to develop competitive responses to a forthcoming DARPA Request for Information (RFI) and any subsequent solicitations. Participants are therefore encouraged to participate in the Poster and Exhibition Session. The Industry Day will be held at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center Hotel, 5000 Seminary Rd., Alexandria, VA 22311. For anyone who may need overnight accommodations, a block of rooms (at the government per diem rate) has been set aside at the Hilton. These rooms are available through Tuesday, March 14. Participants are reminded that alternate accommodations are difficult to find in the area at this time of the year, and are strongly encouraged to register in a timely fashion. A continental breakfast beginning at 7:30 AM, lunch, and all day snacks will be provided. A $75.00 registration fee to cover the cost of the meeting, payable to SRS Technologies will be required. Early registration is encouraged and the Industry Day Registration process is described below. The meeting will be conducted in two parts. The Morning Session will begin at 9:00 AM and will include Invited Presentations addressing the state-of-the-art in both advanced supersonic vehicle design, and various evolving technologies. The Afternoon Session will begin after lunch and will be an interactive Poster and Exhibition Session that will continue until 6:00 PM. Both sessions will be held in the Terrace Room on the lower level of the Hilton Hotel. The Terrace Room will be rearranged during the lunch break for the afternoon Poster and Exhibition Session. An agenda including overview presentations of supersonic design concepts, evolving technologies, and program requirements is being developed for the morning session. The Agenda will be distributed at the meeting. The afternoon will be devoted to an interactive Poster and Exhibition Session to showcase technologies and corporate capabilities. The purpose of the afternoon session is to facilitate the interchange of technical information and teaming of prospective participants. Each attendee must register. Registration will be accomplished by EMAIL to super.sonic@wg.srs.com with the following subject line: ATTENDEE, (your name). Only Checks (made payable to SRS Technologies) and Credit Cards can be accepted for early registration through March 17. To mail in your early registration check, please send it to "Advanced Supersonic Platform Industry Day; SRS Technologies; 4001 N. Fairfax Dr., Suite 725; Arlington, VA 22203". To use a credit card for early registration payment, either fax or e-mail the credit card number, expiration date, and the name as it appears on the card (Visa and Master Card only). The fax number is (703) 522-2891, and the e-mail address is Linda.Darnel@wg.srs.com. In either case please have "Advanced Supersonic Platform Industry Day" written as the subject. Please note that e-mail submission of your credit card information may not be secure. For people who want to wait and register at the conference center on March 28, only Cash and Checks will be accepted. Poster presentations and exhibition displays are hereby solicited from each organization or affiliation. All poster presentations/exhibition displays must be registered by EMAIL no later than COB Friday March 17. There will be no exceptions, and those who have not registered will not be permitted to display/exhibit their technologies and capabilities. Participants in the Poster and Exhibition Session will be provided with one-half table, an easel, and pushpin foam board; however, no electrical power is available. The poster and exhibition session will be divided into two classes: systems and technologies. Systems participants should focus on capabilities to perform vehicle integration or to develop major subsystems, such as advanced engines. Technology participants should focus on their ability to provide breakthrough enabling technologies for an advanced supersonic aircraft. Registration for the poster session will be accomplished by EMAIL to super.sonic@wg.srs.com with the following subject line: POSTER, (your affiliation). We reserve the right to limit participation based on available space. The poster registration EMAIL must consist of the following: 1) Registrant name and affiliation; 2) Designation of the poster as either system or technology; 3) A title and brief description of what will be displayed. This information will be collected into a handout for attendees. An attendee who wishes not to be identified as having attended this Industry Day must so advise DARPA in writing at the time of registration. In the absence of informing DARPA, DARPA will assume that the attendee has no objection to being identified as having attended this Industry Day. This is an open meeting in a very large room. Without knowing the total number of participants, DARPA reserves the right to limit the number of attendees from each organization so as not to exceed the capacity of the Room. Registrations are required for 1.) The Industry Day, and 2.) The Poster and Exhibition Session. All registrations will be by e-mail only and a separate e-mail address super.sonic@wg.srs.com has been established for these events. A separate e-mail is required for each activity. Inquiries of an administrative nature should be sent to Sean Gaffney, SRS Technologies, Inc., 4001 North Fairfax Dr., Suite 725, Arlington, VA 22203. An EMAIL to sean.gaffney@wg.srs.com is preferred. If special questions arise, please EMAIL rwlezien@darpa.mil. For questions of an extraordinary nature, contact Dr. Richard Wlezien at 703-696-2377, or Sean Gaffney at 703-284-7796.
