94550 A -- LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY SEEKS INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS
TO COMMERCIALIZE A HYPERBARIC HYDROTHERMAL ATOMIC FORCE MICROSCOPE SOL
00-011 DUE 041700 POC Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization
(925) 423-3139 The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL),
operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S.
Department of Energy is seeking industrial partners to commercialize
and license an atomic force microscope (AFM) capable of imaging in
flowing fluids at temperatures and pressures significantly above
ambient. LLNL, jointly with the University of Wyoming, has developed a
Hyperbaric Hydrothermal Atomic Force Microscope (HAFM) that can be
used to image solid surfaces in fluids, either gas or liquid, at
pressures ranging from ambient (~15 psi) to at least 150 psi and
temperatures ranging from ambient (~20 C) to 150 C. Vertical resolution
under flowing conditions at high temperature and pressure is better
than 1 nanometer. The wetted parts are all constructed of chemically
non-reactive materials and a variety of normally corrosive fluids
transparent to long wavelength visible light may be used. The HAFM
overcomes current limitations on the temperature and pressure range
accessible to all existing AFMs. Immediate applications of this HAFM
include the study of surface chemical reactions that employ a water
process requiring nanometer-scale monitoring or quality control and
temperatures sufficient to increase net rates of reaction for many
materials heretofore not amenable to study using conventional AFM
methods. The HAFM is of interest in the fields of crystal growth,
semiconductor device manufacturing and other areas of manufacturing
that employ a process occurring at the nanometer scale, metal
corrosion, geochemistry and environmental science. Companies interested
in working with LLNL to commercialize The Technology should provide a
written statement of interest that includes a description of corporate
capability relevant to commercialization of The Technology and basic
corporate information. Respondents are encouraged to provide ancillary
documentation such as annual reports, corporate resumes, and technical
publications. THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. All Letters of Interest must
be received within 60 days of this announcement. Please send Letters of
Interest to Eddie Scott, Business Development Specialist, Lawrence
