This competitive mechanism will be established to provide funding for activities that directly contribute to the objectives of FOREST and which build upon or supplement other program activities. The sub-grants activity could be modeled after the Targeted Grants Program, currently being implemented in the RFE by the Institute for Sustainable Communities. The grants may be of two levels -- up to $10,000 for short-term, low-cost projects and up to $25,000 for projects that are of longer duration and require more substantial funding. This grant program will support government, non-government, and private organizations working in the area of sustainable forest management, forest fire prevention, reforestation, non-timber forest products, secondary wood processing, and pest control and management.
