Naval Surface Warfare Center-Carderock Division, Philadelphia, PA., intends to acquire on a sole source basis from Armor Holdings, Inc., two (2) Kevlar Containment Belts. These belts will be used to minimize the potential of catastrophic cooling fan failures. Within the past two years, several LM2500 gas turbine module cooling fan failures have occurred. In one fan failure, segments of the fan blisque penetrated the ducting that surrounds the fan. Two cooling fans are located in a fan room above the forward engine room and two fans are located in a fan room above the aft engine room. These cooling fan rooms are opened to manned passageways and therefore the cooling fans must be contained to prevent serious injury to ships personnel. The Kevlar Containment Belt will include layers of Kevlar that will be cross stitched with Kevlar Thread. The Kevlar Belt will overlap approximately 10 inches where the ends meet. The Kevlar Belt will be completely enclosed by a heavy duty nylon Protective Cover that resists water, oil and mildew contamination. The nylon Protective Cover shall be a permanent part of the Kevlar Containment Belt. The following is a detailed description of each component of the Kevlar Containment Belt: a. Kevlar Belt: 1. Layers of S710 Kevlar(R) 29 1500d, 24x24 plain weave, 9.6 oz/yd2= 35 layers 2. Length = 116 inches 3. Width = 9.5 inches 4. Layers of Kevlar 29 will be cross stitched together in a 4.5" linear pattern with Kevlar thread Kevlar Containment Belt for LM2500 Gas Turbine Module Cooling Fan Failures b. Kevlar Belt Protective Cover: 1. 1000 Denier Nylon 2. Water, Oil and Mildew Resistant 3. Backcoated with urethane 4. Length= See Description 5. Width= See Description 6. Protective Cover will completely enclose the Kevlar Belt by heavy duty stitching around the circumference of the Protective Cover. See Note 22. Posted 12/27/99 (W-SN411438). (0361)
