Contract Specialist, Mark.Gazillo@FHWA.DOT.GOV. The U. S. Department of
Transportation, Federal Highway Administration intends to award a
multi-year contract to the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership (CAMP),
a consortium of automobile manufacturers, to initiate three special
studies that involve Intelligent Vehicle Initiative and Light Vehicle
Enabling Research. The first study -- Forward Collision Warning
Requirements -- will examine driver performance and alert
functions/interface modality requirements associated with rear-end
crash scenarios involving nighttime and wet road conditions,
non-constant lead vehicle deceleration profiles and last second lane
change maneuvers. The second study, Driver Workload Metrics, will seek
to develop practical, repeatable driver workload metrics for both
visual and cognitive demand that can realistically assess which types
of driver interface tasks are appropriate to perform while a vehicle is
in motion. The third project, Enhanced Digital Maps, will develop a
range of digital map database enhancements that will enable or improve
the performance of various driver assistance systems presently under
development or under consideration. Interested parties should submit a
letter of interest to the FHWA, along with their relevant experience
and capabilities in Intelligent Vehicle Initiative and Light Vehicle
Enabling Research programs to the address listed above. Posted 12/17/99
