COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF NOVEMBER 9,1999 PSA#2472THE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM WILL BE HOLDING ITS 1999 NATIONAL
MEETING ON NOVEMBER 15-17 IN SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA. The Advanced
Technology Program will be holding its 1999 National Meeting on
November 15-17 in San Jose, California. The conference will feature
in-depth workshops along six technology and economic tracks including:
biotechnology, chemistry, information technology, electronics,
materials and manufacturing, and economic assessment. A description of
each of the five technical tracks will be published in the CBD daily.
The fifth track summary is Materials and Manufacturing. This track
will feature an in-depth look at recent developments in materials and
manufacturing with a view towards future investments. These technology
areas are representative of future needs as supported by information
from past workshops and submitted proposals, and will be examined in
the context of the ATP criteria. Challenges which must be overcome to
meet the technology goals of the future will be identified. The process
of commercialization and realization of broad-based benefits resulting
from successful technology development will also be examined. Workshop
topics include: Engineered Surfaces (topics: extreme reliability and
predictability; manufacturing and analytical process tools (e.g.
in-line process control and non-destructive evaluation);
life/performance prediction (e.g. innovative modeling and simulation);
and equipment design and development) Large-Scale Intelligent
Composite Systems (topics: surface transportation; offshore oil
production, civil infrastructure; low-cost manufacturing, durability of
materials/systems, reliability-based design methodology, joining
technology, system integrity and performance lifetimes, and
recyclability) Condition-Based Maintenance (topics: capabilities to
predict, and to continuously refine the prediction of, remaining useful
life of equipment; sensor technologies; continuous monitoring; and
expert systems for maintenance related knowledge and advice) Submicron
Machining (topics cross-cutting, enabling technologies for microsystem
and nanosystem manufacturing, low-volume, high-cost applications,
essentially laboratory prototypes, to mass producible devices)
Innovative Forming Techniques (topics: rapid prototyping/solid freeform
fabrication; the aspects of metals (and metal matrix composites)
forming; and next generation technologies for ceramics and ceramic
matrix composites forming) Advanced Construction Materials and
Processes (topics: new classes of construction materials and related
processes that can better meet the needs of infrastructure repair,
renewal, and upgrade and more carefully utilize increasingly limited
raw materials) The ATP 1999 National Meeting will be hosted by the San
Jose DoubleTree Hotel. For more information and to track schedule
