COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF SEPTEMBER 9,1999 PSA#2428U.S. Postal Service, Headquarters Purchasing, Room 4541, 475 L'Enfant
Plaza, SW., Washington, DC 20260-6230 39 -- LONG LIFE VEHICLE (LLV) MAIL RETRIEVAL SYSTEM POC Peter J.
Schwind 202-268-4121; Herbert R. Strunk 202-268-4460 E-MAIL: LLV Mail
Retrieval System, pschwind@email.usps.gov or hstrunk@email.usps.gov. 1.
The U. S. Postal Service is interested in equipping its Long-Life
Vehicles (LLVs) in carrier route service with a mail stowage and
retrieval system. The system is to assist in loading and unloading mail
in the delivery sequence of the route while the carrier stands outside
the rear of the vehicle. The system should be sufficiently flexible to
accommodate the full spectrum of mail mix from all letter/flats mail to
all parcels and light enough to have only minimal impact on the load
carrying capacity of the vehicle. All reasonable design(s) and
prototype(s) will be considered for testing. No deadline date has been
established for submissions; however, the coming Holiday season will
afford an excellent opportunity to test any system prototypes
proffered. 2. The ultimate selection criteria and purchase quantity
cannot be forecast at this time. The fleet of 144,000 Long-Life
Vehicles is the potential market for such system(s). Since any given
group of vehicles must cope with part or all of the range of mail mix
described above, designs and features may vary depending on locale.
Development of the design(s) and prototype(s) will be at interested
suppliers' expense and patent protection may be advisable. However,
design and build by the same manufacturer would be preferable. 3. The
Postal Service will arrange to make an LLV available at the location
preferred by potential suppliers for a period of two weeks at no cost.
Please contact the Postal representatives named at the telephone
numbers shown to arrange for LLV delivery. Posted 09/07/99
