The Defense Supply Service-Washington, on the behalf of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, intends to award a single source contract (IAW FAR 6.302-1, Only One Responsible Source) to the Harvard University, Olin Institute for Strategic Studies to produce an edition of Mao Zedong's works through October 1, 1949, in English translation, including all those writings of which it is possible to obtain the original texts. The project has hitherto been financed by major grants from the National Endownment for the Humanities and from the Luce Foundation, as well as by smaller contributions from a number of institutions and individuals. Because of the overwhelming important of military writing in the period of 1945-1949, which will be covered by the final two volumes of the series, the Department of Defense has agreed to sponsor this portion of the project.
