GASTROINTESTINAL ILLNESS ATTRIBUTABLE TO DRINKING WATER IN SEATTLE, WA

HSD-99-001, Mann.Margaret@epamail.epa.gov. The US Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD),
National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL),
Human Studies Division (HSD), Epidemiology and Biomarkers Branch (EBB),
located in Chapel Hill, NC is requesting 20 page research assistance
preapplications to conduct epidemiologic studies to determine the
fraction of gastrointestinal illness attributable to drinking water in
Seattle, Washington. Since the amount of waterborne disease in a
population can most directly be estimated by determining the rate of
gastrointestinal illness in the community and multiplying this by an
estimate of the percentage of illness that is attributable to water,
this study will involve measuring both of these parameters in a
population and by community surveillance. In addition to
gastrointestinal illnesses, the applicants will be encouraged to
consider the list of microbial organisms listed on the Contaminant
Candidate List (CCL) and propose possible studies to evaluate the role
of drinking water in their transmission. The CCL is available on EPA's
web page at http://www.epa.gov/OGWDW/ccl/cclfs.html. Based on the
availability of funds and the research proposed, up to $900,000 over a
four-year period may be availableto support the research efforts
beginning in January 2000. An independent peer review panel will
evaluate all preapplications. The research preapplications must be
received by August 13, 1999. The selected preapplication(s) will be
asked to submit a full application along with EPA forms for an
assistance agreement, by November 1, 1999. Eligible applicants include
members of nonprofit research organizations. Nonprofit research
organizations are defined as institutions of higher education,
hospitals, and other non-profit organizations. Statutory authority for
EPA funding of the specified research is authorized in the Safe Water
Act, as amended in 1996. Interested applicants must be eligible to
receive Federal Assistance under this statutory authorities and the
Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 30-General Regulation for
Assistance Programs, and Part 40-Research and Demonstration Grants.
ONLY NONPROFIT RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE FEDERAL
ASSISTANCE UNDER THESE ACTS SHOULD SUBMIT APPLICATIONS. The
solicitation and any subsequent amendments will be available via the
Internet Worldwide Web at http://www.epa.gov/nheerl/solicitations/hsd.
Telephone and FAX requests will not be honored. It will be your
responsibility to frequently check the same site where the solicitation
is posted for any amendments. Posted 06/28/99 (W-SN347988). (0179) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0005 19990630\A-0005.SOL)
