E-MAIL: William Underwood, william.underwood@ws.wpafb.af.mil. A -- INTRODUCTION: Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate/Survivability & Sensor Materials Division, (AFRL/ MLPO) solicits research proposals (technical and cost) on PRDA number 99-11-MLK, titled "Alternative Materials for Very Long Wave Infrared (VLWIR)". The purpose of the research is to develop alternative sensor technologies for space-based infrared detection of mid-course missile threats. The successful completion of this effort pushes the wavelength toward the technology required for implementation of 25 micron (wavelength) at 40K or greater. It has been determined that a Type II semiconductor superlattice is a potential solution to this technology. The areas of research would include investigation of substrates suitable for epitaxy of InAs/InGaSb. This includes type, composition, orientation and surface condition. Other areas of research will include design and growth of InAs/InGaSb absorbing layers of the correct band-gap for up to 25 micron cutoff wavelength and demonstration of VLWIR materials. The quality of interfaces should be investigated by optical and electrical means. Development of infrared detector technology suitable for fabrication of at least 128x128 staring FPA's that operate in the range of 40-65K. Interested offerors may view and/or download the full PRDA solicitation by accessing the AFRL Wright Research Site Contracting homepage at http://www.wrs.af.mil/contract/. Direct questions to the Contracting point of contact identified in the announcement Posted 06/23/99 (D-SN346359). (0174)
