following are questions and answers provided by vendors in reference to
the solitication notice 52-PAPT-9-01020. This is not considered a
modification to the solicitation notice simply additional information.
Except as provided all other terms and conditions remain unchanged. --
1. Question: The solicitation describes the system operating on one
server, but also states that 4 copies are needed. How are the
additional 3 software copies to be used? -- Answer: The system is
workstation based, not server based. One copy for the primary
workstation, one copy for a backup workstation, two copies for
development staff. -- 2. Question: What is meant by tagged data? Could
you supply a brief example? -- Answer: Tagged data means a format
similar to SGML/XML tagging, but not necessarily requiring a DTD. The
data formats are still being defined and the final data format may have
a different set of tags and may nest within other tags, but a brief
example of current test data for two marks from Section 2 of the O.G.

</Gs> -- 3. Question: If there is a text repository other than a
file server, who will do the integration? -- Answer: The text
repository is outside the scope of this contract. Assume textual data
will be supplied in flat file(s) extracted from the Trademarks DBMS.
The data extraction and file transfer to the workstation will be done
by PTO personnel. -- 4. Question: How are graphics identified? --
Answer: Graphics are identified by path/filename on existing systems.
If additional parameters are needed by the BCS graphics subsystem,
USPTO personnel will write the software to provide the additional
parameters. -- 5. Question: Is there a graphics repository? -- Answer:
The graphics repository is an NT server with graphics files stored by
serial number on the file system. If necessary graphic files for a
specific issue of the Official Gazette can be copied to the BCS
workstation as part of the file transfer process. -- 6. Question: What
is the anticipated workflow for graphics? -- Answer: Drawing pages are
submitted with trademark applications that have graphic design
elements, they are scanned and sent to a contractor for cropping. The
cropped images are stored on an NT server, and go through a quality
review process to ensure that the images are of acceptable quality. The
images residing on the NT server will be used in the production of the
Official Gazette. In the event that an image is unacceptable quality
for publication, the mark will be temporarily withdrawn from the
publication process to allow correction of any errors. -- 7. Question:
Is there a requirement for converting and/or scaling graphics? --
Answer: This product must have the ability to rescale graphics. An
image conversion capability is desirable but can be accomplished by
processing external to the BCS. -- 8. Question: Is the Licensing
Agreement, and the Representation & Certifications Commercial Items
included in the page count? -- Answer: No, and Offerors are reminded
that both should be included with their proposal. Posted 06/09/99
