Pamela Shauger, pshauger@pica.army.mil. This procurement is to perform
x-ray inspection, assembly and packing of 81mm mortar ammunition with
Composition B High Explosive. There are approximately 65,000 rounds
that require inspection. Approximately one third of them are assembled
with fuze and propulsion system. The inspection system must be able to
reliably screen out rounds with defects such as cavities in the
explosive; base separation between explosive and interior surface of
the shell body; and cracks in the shell body. Conventional wet plate
x-ray systems have been unable to reliable detect these types of
defects. Advanced digital radiographic inspection equipment with
software for automated measurement of the critial characteristics such
as base separation is anticipated. The unassembled bodies that pass
all inspection shall be assembled and packed into complee rounds. The
assembled rounds have a hazard classification of 1.1. Materiel that
fails inspections shall be disassembled to reuse components where
possible and the rejected components shall be demilitarized. This
solicitation should be available on or about 10 June 1999. Posted
