The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) intends to award a sole source contract to the Mayak Production Associaton to reprocess spent nuclear fuel (SNF) removed from 6 strategic ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) being dismantled pursuant to agreements between the U.S. Government and the Russian Federation. The Mayak Production Association is the only commercial reprocessing entity within the Russian Federation. Due to political, environmental, and security concerns, the SNF cannot be transported outside of the Russian Federation for reprocessing.
