Transit Authority (WMATA) is soliciting expressions of interest for the
procurement and installation of a Bus Far Collection System. The new
system will be required to accept and register coins, tokens and
currency. It will also be required to process magnetic fare cards and
the smart cards (SmarTrip) to issue magnetically encoded transfers.
About 1400 buses be equipped. A "best value" procurement is
anticipated. The schedule is as follows: Specification released for
proposals -- summer of 1999, award-fall 1999 delivery of the
demonstration equipment -- summer 2002. Installation of the remaining
buses-winter 2002 through winter 2003 at a rate of about 30 buses per
week. Qualified and interested firms are invited to submit an
