Paul Grahovac, pg2@inel.gov. A -- Nondestructive material
characterization. U. S. Patent Number 4,995,260. This is a potential
technology development and licensing opportunity with Lockheed Martin
Idaho Technologies Company (LMITCO), the prime operating contractor for
the Department of Energy at the Idaho National Engineering and
Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). In conventional technology for
nondestructive material characterization., the large electrical signal
required to generate the ultrasonic waves causes several problems in
the design and construction of the piezoelectric (PZ) transducer and
associated electronics. These include limited dynamic range, poor
control of the signal shape, and a poor resolution of echoes which
return to the PZ transducer a short time after the pulse. This patented
technology replaces the induction of stress waves with an electrical
signal induced by a laser pulse. The primary advantage of this device
is that the receiving electronics do not have to be electrically
isolated from the initiatingpulse, since the usual large electrical
potentials are not present. This means the electrically noisy input
diodes commonly used to reduce the pulse to acceptable levels in the
receiving amplifier are eliminated. As a result, the dynamic range of
the receiving amplifier is increased. LMITCO is seeking a written
indication of interest from industry partners interested in funding a
collaborative technology development project and/or entering into a
license agreement for the purpose of developing and commercializing
this technology. License terms will include an up-front licensing fee
and a running royalty based on a percentage of sales. This is not an
opportunity to provide goods or services to LMITCO or the Department of
Energy. This Request for Interest (RFI) will close to response 30 days
after publication. Interested parties should send e-mail to
pg2@inel.gov (Paul Grahovac, Account Executive, Technology Transfer
Office, LMITCO). If you do not have e-mail access, send regular mail to
