Ries (406) 494-7188 This is a Request for Information is to determine the availability or the possibility of developing an engineered tailings cap that utilizes a material or materials that can be mixed/incorporated with a large percentage of the mine tailings to provide a cap for an existing tailings pile. The developed cap will be required to provide long-term erosion resistance, campatibility with acidic and basic conditions, and exposure resistance to freeze/thaw and wet/dry cycling. Temperature extremes at the demonstration site vary from -40 to +90 degrees F. The tailings are fine-grained, silty material containing a substantial amount of heavy metals. Samples of these tailings will be made available to interested parties upon request. Subsequent to this Notice, a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) will be issued. Offerors will be required to identify and provide an environmentally benigh cap stabilization material that will meet the specific requirements of the project. The Offeror should submit the cap formulation,the base materials for the cap (excluding the tailings material), and Material Safety Data Sheets. As an added option, Offerors may submit a cured sample of the final cap product for comparison purposes. Submitted materials will be tested at the MSE Facility in Butte, Montana.
