Service intends to negotiate a sole source contract with the Division
of Subsistence, Alaska Department of Fish & Game. The purpose of the
contract is to gain a better understanding of current patterns of
subsistence harvest and use of natural resources in part of the Tongass
National Forest. This information will provide a scientific basis for
the Tongass National Forest subsistence management responsibilities
stipulated in the Alaska National Interest Land Conservation Act. The
contract is to be completed no later than December 31, 1999. The
proposed Contractor has initiated projects to update subsistence on
harvest and use information for some portions of Southeast Alaska and
has prepared summary reports based on studies it has completed to date.
Because of its recent and continuing work, the proposed Contractor
could more efficiently provide a report that extends the geographical
coverage of subsistence harvest and use information. The proposed
Contractor has extensive expertisein collecting subsistence information
in Southeast Alaska and has developed sound professional and scientific
creditability through 20 years of related work. All responses received
by March 3, 1999, COB (local time) will be considered by the
