Deborah Smith-Castle (301/827-7160), Fax: (301/827-7103) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and The Center For Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) intends to award a purchase order for technical services to implement a FDA project to study antibiotic resistance of bacterial pathogens in mouse model systems. The experiments involve injection of mice with genetically modified strains of Salmonella bacteria, removal of spleen, liver, and peritoneum from euthanized animals, recovery of bacteria from infected organs, and microbiological plating assays to determine the number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The contractor shall: 1.) Provide one (1) experienced person to provide technical assistance for implementing the laboratory project. 2.) Conduct mouse infection experiments using a human bacterial pathogen and observation of mice for signs of infections. 3.) Conduct mouse dissection and organ disruption procedures to recover bacteria from infected organs using aseptic conditions. 4.) Conduct microbiological experiments to enumerate bacteria in samples recovered from infected animals. The microbiological assays shall include the full range of experimentation from media preparation to calculation of data.
