A -- TRAINING IN GENETICS POC Peggy Mills, Contract Specialist, e-mail: pm39m@nih.gov or phone: 301/435-0351 The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) intends to negotiate, on a non-competitive basis, with the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC). ATCC will coordinate, implement and manage a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, training course on the genetic approaches to investigating complex heart, lung, and blood diseases. This course is directed at new young investigators, established investigators interested in pursuing studies in this direction, and other investigators having an interest or a need to understand the genetics of heart, lung, or blood diseases. The ATCC has a unique capability because of their experience in conducting this training course in genetics under Contract No. N01-HV-58160, and has the requisite knowledge, technical expertise and familiarity with the course content. The contractor has developed teaching materials and brochures for the course, made arrangements for advertising the course in a number of scientific journals of interest to the heart, lung, and blood community, and initiated a mailing of brochures to individuals identified by the NHLBI staff. ATCC has performed these services since 1995. An extension of the existing contract would allow additional development of the course concepts and format, provide for better continuity between courses, and furnish a bigger and more extended sample size (number of students) for the final evaluation of the course. This will be a cost reimbursement, completion type contract for an extension period of 12 months (9/1/99-8/31/00). The SIC Code is 7299 and the size is $5.0 Million. NIH knows of no other organization that can provide this service without substantial duplication of cost and program delays to the Government. The authority for this action is 41 U.S.C. 253(c)(1), as set forth in FAR 6.302-1, only one responsible source and no other supplies or services will satisfy agency requirements.
