Grahovac, pg2@inel.gov. A -- RAPID PRODUCTION OF STEEL INSERTS FOR
PLASTIC INJECTION MOLDS. This technology recently received one of the
prestigious R&D 100 Awards (http://www.rdmag.com). Potential technology
development and patent licensing opportunity with Lockheed Martin Idaho
Technologies Company (LMITCO), the prime operating contractor for the
Department of Energy at the Idaho National Engineering and
Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). LMITCO has developed and patented a
new technology called rapid solidification process ("RSP Tooling").
Molten tooling steel is sprayed onto a tool pattern and the shape and
surface texture of the pattern is quickly and precisely replicated to
form a new mold insert in minutes. RSP Tooling replaces the expensive
and time consuming conventional process of machining the desired mold
insert from a rough casting or forged billet -- a process that can take
as long as six months. The system has been successfully demonstrated on
several industry tool patterns, and there is strong end-user interest
in the technology. LMITCO is seeking a written indication of interest
from industry partners who would consider funding collaborative
technology development and entering into a patent license agreement for
the purpose of further developing and fully commercializing this
technology. License terms will include an up-front licensing fee and a
running royalty based on a percentage of revenues from the use of the
technology. We are seeking a limited number of end-user licensees and
also one licensee (or more) to manufacture the systems for end users
around the world. Additional background information follows. RSP
Tooling produces mold inserts from the toughest and most important
tooling steels. The technology addresses the need for rapid product
development and product launch that is exploding across all industry.
The automobile industry, among many others, is very focused on
expediting product launches. Estimates of the worldwide rapid tooling
market are as high as $20 billion. RSP Tooling makes realizable the
goals of short time to market, early market entry, increased market
share, higher profit margins, and extended sales life. Companies
interested in licensing the technology from LMITCO or obtaining the
systems from an equipment provider should send a message indicating
their interest preferably by e-mail to pg2@inel.gov or by regular mail
to the following address: Paul Grahovac, Account Executive, Technology
Transfer Office, LMITCO, P. O. Box 1625, Idaho Falls, ID 83415-3805.
This is not an opportunity to provide goods or services to LMITCO or
the Department of Energy. This Request for Interest (RFI) will close to
response 60 days after publication. Posted 01/12/99 (W-SN287085).
