The Royal Australian Navy is in the process of upgrading the electrical power generating capacity of HMAS KANIMBLA ex USS SAGINAW LST 1188. The upgrade will require either an additional two 750 KW alternators or four 1000 KW alternators, depending on the results of a total power requirement study currently being undertaken. Alternator specifications are as follows: 750 KW or 1000 KW; sea water cooled, totally enclosed air; 900 RPM; 60 cycle; 450 Volt; 3-phase; same space, footprint and shaft connection details as for the existing 750 KW GE alternators; and prime movers: existing ALCO 251 V8 (1,460 BHP).
